Privacy Policy

RunReel is a free tool that turns a GPX or TCX file into a video — either a greenscreen overlay for your own footage, or a finished clip on a map — entirely in your browser. This policy explains what we do, and mostly don't, with your data.

Your running data

Your GPX or TCX file never leaves your device. It is read in your browser and the video is made there. We do not upload it, receive it, or store it on any server — and that holds for every video RunReel makes, whichever background you pick.

Map backgrounds are the one exception, and they are your choice. A map has to be fetched before it can be drawn. When you choose one, your browser asks a map service for the tiles covering the area you ran in, so roughly where you ran becomes visible to that service — much as it would be if you opened any map website. Your file is still never sent, your coordinates never reach us, and nothing about your run is stored on our side. The greenscreen background fetches nothing at all: choose it and your run stays entirely on your device.

The services involved, each with its own privacy policy, are OpenFreeMap for the drawn maps, EOX for the satellite imagery, and AWS Terrain Tiles for the elevation behind 3D terrain.

Counting steps, without cookies

To see where people get stuck, our pages request a short, empty address on our own site when you reach certain steps: opening a page, loading a run (a sample or your own file), starting, finishing, cancelling or leaving a video, saving or sharing it, or switching to another browser. The address names only the step and broad labels — phone or computer; the app whose built-in browser you're in, such as Threads; the kind of site that sent you, such as a search engine; and for a video, a sample or your own file and which background. It carries no cookie or identifier, and nothing from your file, route, run or video.

Our host, Amazon Web Services, logs these requests in our account without your IP address, browser details or the page you came from: each line holds only the time, that address, the country your connection appears to come from, and a status code. We use them only for totals, never to follow one person, and each line is deleted after 90 days. Choose Decline on our banner, or send Global Privacy Control from your browser, and these requests aren't made.

Analytics

Only if you choose Accept, we also use Google Analytics — for example, to see how long exports take on different devices. It never includes your GPX or TCX file, your route or your coordinates. Google Analytics sets cookies holding a random ID, and Google receives your IP address to estimate a rough location. Google processes this on our behalf; how Google handles it is described in Google's own privacy policy. You can opt out with Google's browser add-on, or by choosing Decline.

Cookies and your choices

The only cookies are Google Analytics', set only after you choose Accept. The step counting above uses none. Your banner choice and your language are remembered in your browser's local storage. When our English home page moves a browser set to Korean to the Korean page, the browser keeps the address of the page that sent you just for that move, so the Korean page can tell what kind of site it was, and deletes it as the Korean page opens. To change your choice at any time, use Privacy choices at the bottom of any page: it forgets your answer, removes the analytics cookies and asks again.

Like any website, our host receives your IP address to deliver the pages; we don't keep it.

What we don't do

No accounts, no sign-ups, no passwords. We don't sell or share your data, and we don't run ads.
