How to export your GPX file
To make an overlay you need a GPX or TCX file — the route and timing of your run. Here's how to get one from the most common watches and apps. Menus move as apps update, but the option is usually on the activity, under a share or ⋯ menu, labelled Export or GPX. TCX works exactly the same way — where the same menu offers it, either format is fine.
Garmin
Open Garmin Connect on the web (connect.garmin.com), open the activity, click the gear or ⋯ icon at the top right, and choose Export to GPX. The file downloads straight away. (The phone app doesn't export GPX — use the website.)
Strava
Open the activity on strava.com (the website, not the app), click the ⋯ menu, and choose Export GPX. This is also the easiest fallback for anything else — most apps and watches can sync to Strava, and Strava always gives you a clean GPX.
Apple Watch
Apple's Fitness and Health apps can't export a GPX on their own. Two easy ways around it:
- Use a companion app like RunGap or HealthFit — both read your Apple Health workouts and export them as GPX.
- Or connect Apple Health to Strava and export the GPX from Strava.
Samsung
Samsung Health doesn't export a clean GPX by itself. The simplest route is to connect Samsung Health to Strava, then export the GPX from Strava (above).
Coros, Suunto, Polar
All three export GPX from their own app or website — look for Export or Share on the activity. On Polar Flow, open the activity, then Export → GPX. On Coros and Suunto, open the activity and choose Export / Download GPX.
Anything else
Stuck, or using an app that isn't here? Connect it to Strava — almost every watch and running app syncs there, and Strava exports a clean GPX in two clicks.
